How to Use This Series

We recommend…

  • Teaching the sight words and phonics skills in each book before the child reads the book. Teaching the sight words and phonics skills in each book before the child reads the book to help them experience success as readers.

  • Using sight word flash cards to teach the sight words. You can follow a Montessori three-period lesson format

  • Providing feedback like, “Did that make sense? Look closely at the letters and try again.” or “Look closely at the letters and sound them out.” when a child makes a mistake.

  • Noticing when the book is too hard and causing frustration, and offering, “You had the courage to try this really hard book! Let’s give another one a try now. Do you want to read this one or this one?”

  • Engaging in a conversation about the book during and after reading. Use the questions at the back of the book for ideas and conversation starters.
